LBJ White House Tapes Past Programs

 
 
Hear a special program of President Lyndon Johnson’s 1965 calls with the chairmen of some key Senate Committees: Armed Services, Foreign Relations and Government Operations. The war in Vietnam is discussed in most of these calls. LBJ also talks to the senators about military pay and military construction bills and about his future presidential library.

In this program of phone calls from July 1964, LBJ prepares for the Democratic National Convention in August. You’ll hear LBJ discuss the vice presidential slot, nominating speeches and other issues with the mayors of New York and Chicago, and with the governors of Vermont and California. LBJ also talks to his Defense Secretary and National Security Adviser and other topics include Vietnam, the poverty bill, and a meeting about three civil rights workers who’ve disappeared in Mississippi.
